This was a modern extension to provide a contemporary additional to an existing traditional Colchester town house. A traditionally constructed extension on strip footings and a concrete slab with external walls constructed to contrast with but compliment the original brickwork.
The roof was a timber roof with single ply roof coverings. The main feature of the roof was the central lantern style rooflight which along with the bifolding external doors were designed to allow the maximum amount of light to enter this garden room extension.
The client’s requirement was to provide an internal space that could be opened up to make it feel like it was part of the garden during the summer months. At same time the area needed to be closed off during the winter months so that it could be used as a genuine extension to the main house. The careful design and use of modern insulation and materials met the brief perfectly.
